Two Types of Under Sink Water Filters

If you’re brand new to the world of water filtration, it might help you to know that there are three types of under sink water filters available for you to choose from: Conventional, Simple, and Reverse Osmosis. Even though there are three types, for the purpose of finding the best under sink water filter, we’ll only be focusing on the first two. (Reverse osmosis is a different system altogether, so we won’t be including it here.)

Depending on the set-up of your sink, your skill at plumbing, and the water filtration goals of your household, either of the two under-sink water filter types may be right for you.

Conventional Under-Sink Water Filter

A conventional under-sink water filter is one that attaches to your cold water line, which allows water to pass through the filtration system and out from a completely separate faucet.

The original faucet will still work for unfiltered water in this case, and your hot water line will not be attached to the filtration system. Since an extra faucet is needed for filtered water, a conventional filter might be tricky to install unless you already have an extra hole drilled on your sink or countertop. Otherwise, some additional drilling might be necessary to get the filter installed.

Conventional Under-Sink Filters Pros

  • Because filtered water comes from a separate faucet from unfiltered water, conventional under-sink filters last much longer.
  • A lower flow rate means that water spends more time traveling through the water filter, and therefore comes out with far fewer contaminants.

Conventional Under-Sink Filters Cons

  • If you don’t have one already, you will either need to buy a sink with an extra faucet or get ready to drill a new hole in your sink or countertop.
  • Because this filter attaches to your cold water line, only cold water will come out from the faucet, meaning hot filtered water will not be an option.

Simple Under-Sink Water Filters

While the method a simple under-sink water filter uses is pretty complex, this device is actually named for the simplicity of the installation method. Pay attention, those who are constructionally challenged: if all the talk of drilling holes in the previous example was making you a little bit nervous, a simple under-sink water filter might be the better bet for you.

Once a simple under-sink water filter has been installed in your sink, all the cold water supply gets directed through that filter. There is no extra faucet at play here; your filtered water will come out directly through your regular faucet.

It’s worth noting, however, that this type of filter is still connected to the cold water line, so a simple under-sink water filter will not be able to filter hot water.

Simple Under-Sink Filters Pros

  • There is no additional faucet required during installation, which means that you can save yourself having to drill a hole in your sink or countertop.
  • Because of the lack of complexity in the installation process, simple under-sink water filters are much more inexpensive.

Simple Under-sink Filters Cons

  • More water gets filtered in this process, so the filters will have to be changed more often
  • The water flow in this filter is higher, so water will travel through the filtration system faster and there will be some contaminants that make it through and into your water.

The Benefits of Under Sink Water Filters

under sink water filter installation

We have some scary news; when water comes out of your tap, there’s a big chance that it brings lead, arsenic, hormones, and all kinds of contaminants which put your health and the health of your family at risk.

Here is what a good water filter will protect you from:

  • Bad odors and tastes that leave a sour feeling in your mouth.
  • Sediment, or solid residue that can end up in tap water.
  • Nitrites and nitrates which can pose harm to children and the elderly.
  • Limescale caused by calcium and magnesium.
  • Fluoride, which can weaken your immune system and accelerate aging.
  • Aluminum, which is linked to Alzheimer’s, hyperactivity, learning disabilities, liver disease, and more.
  • Bacteria and Microorganisms.
  • Chlorine
  • Heavy metals
  • Arsenic

Drinking filtered, clean water on a regular basis can have wonderful effects for your overall health as well. It has been linked to nutrient absorption, weight loss, skin hydration, and detoxification. All of these things are wonderful benefits to your health.

Why Get an Under Sink Water Filter

If you don’t have an under sink water filter in your home, the truth of the matter is that you don’t know for sure what is in your water. With any number of contaminants possible, drinking unfiltered water puts your health at risk.

Having an under sink water filter will not only put your mind at ease, but there are so many varied types that no matter what your budget or home needs, you can find one that works for you. Many of the options available are cheap or require little additional modifications in order to have it installed in your home.

Some people, though, decide to opt out of having an under sink water filter for a variety of reasons. For example, under-sink water filters tend to be larger than a countertop system.

Even though they’re out of the way, they may take up valuable storage space under your sink. Additionally, these systems can range in difficulty during the installation process, and some families choose to forgo them in favor of countertop or other filtration systems.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Buy an Under Sink Water Filter

So, you know all the reasons you want to have an under-sink water filter, you know whether a conventional or simple approach is better for you, and you have decided to purchase one! Congratulations, you are one step closer to benefiting your health tremendously! But with so many dozens of options on the market, where are you even supposed to start looking?

Here are some of the most important factors that you should pay special attention to when trying to find the filter that will work best for your home.

What Features to Look for in an Under Sink Water Filter

Water Flow Rate

The water flow rate is the speed at which water makes its way through the filtration system, and it is measured in GPM, or Gallons Per Minute. A higher water flow rate indicates that water moves faster through the system. This means more water for you, but also a higher drain on the device’s filtering capacity.

Additionally, at higher water flow rates, water moves through the filter quickly enough that some contaminants will escape through and make their way into your water. However, this is not the case with lower GPMs which allow water to spend more time in the filter, and therefore come out cleaner; the downside of this is that your water may take a little longer to be filtered out.

Make sure to pay attention to GPM when you’re shopping around!

Filtering Capacity

The filtering capacity is the level of efficiency a filter has when it comes to removing contaminants; another way of looking at it is the lifespan of your filter.

Capacity is measured in gallons, telling you the maximum amount of gallons that can be filtered before the filter will need to be replaced. Capacity can vary widely from filter to filter, and some products will even vary depending on the specific contaminants themselves, with certain models designed for certain contaminants.

If you are concerned about a particular contaminant in your home, it’s recommended that you use a water quality testing kit at home to find out which contaminants are the highest risk to you and look for a filter which targets that specifically.

Ease of Installation

It is true that some under-sink water filters are easier to install than others, and the last thing you want to do is end up with a filter that’s too difficult for you to install properly or one that accidentally breaks as you attempt to install it. Ease of installation is important in this regard; make sure your filter is one whose functionality you understand and can operate.

Remember that models which are easier to install will also be easier to change the filters in as time goes by, so this is important for more than just the first time you install your under-sink water filter.

Contaminant Reduction

As we mentioned earlier in this review, certain filters are designed specifically to be better at preventing certain contaminants from entering your water. They might be highly capable of preventing one contaminant, but less effective at preventing another. Before purchasing an under-sink water filter, make sure to test the water that comes out of your faucet at home so you know which contaminants pose the highest risk for you.

Then, you can look for a filter which targets that specific contaminant and reduces it, maximizing the health benefits for you and your family!

Certification

Some under-sink water filters have certification from NSF International (NSF stands for National Sanitation Foundation), which is a nonprofit testing lab. When an under-sink water filter receives NSF Certification, it tells you that this specific filter has been confirmed as capable of removing a certain substance or contaminant.

Again, testing at home is an amazing supplement to this; look for a filter which has NSF Certification in the contaminants that are the biggest threat to your home. (NSF also has some third-party labs which certify products to their standards. These include CSA, UL, and WQA, so you can trust those certification seals as well!)

Cartridge Longevity

If you have experience using a water filtration system of any type in the past, you will know that the filters in these systems need to be changed out every once in a while or risk losing their filtration capabilities.

Some products on the market will need a new filter every couple of months, and others can last multiple years! Take note of how often a specific filter will need to be swapped out before purchasing to make sure that you can stay on top of it and keep your water clean because a dirty filter is no filter at all!

Filter Cost & Lifespan

It’s critically important to know how much replacement filters cost and how long they last. If your under-sink water filter doesn’t need a replacement for five years, but you’ve bought a filter replacement that only lasts six months, then you’ve lost four and a half years of value! When it comes to your budget, you want to know how often you’ll have to buy additional filters. Finding a good balance between cost and lifespan will save you tons of time and money in the long run.

Under Sink Water Filter Installation & Maintenance Guide

Below is a video that demonstrates the best way to install any under counter water filtration system, regardless of the brand.

Step-By-Step Under Sink Water Filter Installation

Alright, are you ready to be amazed by how easy it is to install your new under sink water filter? Here is the simplest process you could possibly dream of:

  1. Remove the tubing from underneath your sink.
  2. Make a note of the location of your new filter.
  3. Double check that the plumbing connects appropriately.
  4. Connect your new filter to your sink.
  5. If you have one, secure the mounting location of your new filter.
  6. Test the filter to ensure that it’s working properly.
  7. Enjoy clean, contaminant-free water!

When to Change the Water Filter Cartridge

How often should you change your water filter cartridge? Well, this is dependent on the filter that you’re using, and the recommendations for how often to change it are typically listed with the product itself.

For some systems, this change needs to happen every six months, and for others, the filter can run for five years without ever being changed. Some filters even let you know when it’s time to change over!

How to Clean and Maintain Your Under Sink Water Filter

Again, the specifics of cleaning and maintenance when it comes to your under sink water filter will be dependent on the product itself, and it’s always best to follow manufacturer instruction in this regard. However, there are some universal steps that should be taken during the cleaning process.

  1. Turn off your water!
  2. Drain any excess water in the system.
  3. Open up the casing.
  4. Remove the old filters.
  5. Clean out the internal casing.
  6. Insert the new filters.
  7. Close the casing.
  8. Turn on your water to check for leaking!

Make sure that you are careful and diligent about cleaning your water filter! After all, there is no point to having a water filter if it’s not contaminant-free.

Final Words of Caution

Sometimes it can feel like staying healthy requires us to be ever-vigilant and constantly hunting for the next dangerous thing. While water contaminants are another of these looming risks, having a reliable under-sink water filter in your home can allow you to protect yourself from the risk without having to spend every day worrying about it.

Depending on the type of system and specifications, you can easily find an under-sink water filter that suits your specific needs.

So if you’re looking to establish healthy water drinking habits, protect yours and your family’s health from harmful contaminants, or just trying to have tastier water, an under-sink water filter is undoubtedly one of the best long-term purchases you can make.

You can have peace of mind knowing that, regardless of any mistakes or pollution that may occur at your water’s source, you have established a line of defense in your home. And you can enjoy a nice cold glass of clean water while you do it!
